Sirogojno
In the museum of folk building in Sirogojno, old rural buildings from Zlatibor, were gathered and exhibited. Zlatibor is a mountain on the southwest of Serbia, while the museum is on the altitude of 890 m.
The building of the museum began in 1979. Some houses were completely built in wood, with no iron, even nails were wooden. This was the sign of a weak economic power of the household. All the buildings are furnished with the original household furniture, just as the houses in the past. In the yard and basements of the houses there is an exhibition of a collection of old tools and equipment. Everything exhibited have been gathered in the area of Zlatibor.
Primary occupation of the people had been cattle breeding since agriculture was not sufficient for living. The people planted corn, wheat, oats and barley, while plums and apples were the most favourable of fruits. The house and everything else had been made of wood. The same case was with all the other parts of Serbia where there is a plenty of forest.
The time when the architecture of this area emerged is not easy to establish. Most buildings were built in the XIX century since the older collapsed due to both war demolishing and limited time of wooden structure.
Yet, it is quite certain that the architecture of the area near Zlatibor is considerably older because the form element of the log cabin is the same as the form elements saved in many old Slovenian archeological finds. Due to this, their value is especially considerable.
If you want to hear a story about the Serbian family life in the past, then a visit with a guide is the best possible solution.
