The fortress of Nis
Although it stems from the XVII century, archeological researches had shown that on the very place of today’s fortress in Nis there has been a continuity of military fortifications since the Roman times. Found documents and military maps confirmed the existence of the fortification in the middle Ages.
Turks had taken Nis in 1395, but only in the second half of the XVII century, they had started the works on the fortification, which was shortly interrupted by the conquering of the Austrians. After the Austrian’s retreating, the Turks realized that the first defense line situated on the Danube was not so secure, so they started intensive works on the fortress having finished it in 1723.
The fortress is situated in the very centre of Nis and it is open for visits. One can visit summer stage, plenty of cafes and restaurants. During the summer period, it is a centre of cultural events (Film Festival, music events – Nisville International Jazz Festival, many concerts on the beautiful, open stage…).
